Silicon prosthesis put in use in 1960s have been developed and commonly used in our times. Silicon has been proven a harmless substance for human body in numerous scientific studies. Apart from breast prosthesis, the products containing silicon are widely used in medical practice (e.g. joint prosthesis).
Breast prostheses are structures of breast shape resembling a balloon. Outer layer is made of silicon with rough surface to adapt into the body tissues. The filling has one of the two contents: gel form of silicon (gel-filled) or serum physiologic (saline-filled). The choice of filling is based on the physician's discretion. There are two variations of the shape of silicon prosthesis: round disk shape or anatomical shape (drop silicon). The choice is made based on the individual's natural breast shape.
Contrary to common fears, there is no scientific evidence as to breast silicon and cancer association. Similarly, it has no negative effects on breast-feeding or pregnancy. The prosthesis can be used in individuals of all ages. It is one of the aesthetic operations providing great benefits for psychosexual life of the individual and optimum patient satisfaction.
The Operation
The use of all drugs including Aspirin and alike should be avoided 7-10 days before the operation. The operation is performed in operation theatre under general anesthesia. It lasts about 1.5-2 hours. The patient can go home 6-8 hours after the operation. There is no need for hospitalization.
There are three locations for silicon implantation: armpits, nipples, and the curve under the breast. The first two locations have some drawbacks. A safer and more common method is the implantation of silicon through the curve under the breast. Depending on the physician's preference and the condition of the patient's nipple, silicon may be placed either under or over the muscle under the breast tissue. We, at Derma-Plast, prefer to implant the silicon under the muscle by entering through the curve below the breast (for certain patients). Thus, no damage is inflicted upon the breast tissue.
Silicon, unlike common belief, has a highly deep localization. It is placed way below dermis, epidermal tissue, breast tissue, and chest muscle. It is not possible to feel on external touch. The operational incision is 3-4 cm long and is on the natural curve under the breast. The incision scar becomes vague in time.
Postoperative period
During the first few days after the operation, arm movements may be painful, but this is a temporary condition. The sutures are removed on the 10th day. The breasts should be massaged as directed by the physician from first day onwards. Massaging will prevent possible capsule contractures. After 3-4 weeks, the pain subsides. The patient should not be afraid to touch her breasts. After 3-4 weeks, she may return to her normal routine and even lie on the breasts.
Silicon will not burst with possible traumas. Only injuries with life threatening, sharp and pointed substances may cause it to burst, in which case silicon is removed and replaced.
The patients within the range of mammography applications can undergo mammography procedure in an qualified center while having silicon implantations. In advanced ages, the patient can have the silicon removed or changed.
