Liposuction is a process through which the fatty tissue localized in various sections of the body despite diet and sports is vacuumed out.

Liposhaping, liposhaving, lipoplasty or suction lipectomy are methods of liposuction, which are not different from liposuction.

In this text, all of them will be referred to as 'liposuction' (liposhaping, also termed as 'wet technique', involves preoperative liquid injection to the area where fatty tissue will be removed). Liposuction does not aim at weight loss or changing the scale weight. It is a contour improvement operation. Application of this technique for weight loss will not be proper. After the operation, there will be some weight loss proportional to the fatty tissue removed. Nevertheless, the objective of the operation is not weight loss.

The person to resort to this operation should be one who has tried dieting and sports, but could not achieve the desired looks. The areas of concern are thighs, waistline, inner parts of the legs, abdomen, and behind and around the knees.

Despite all the effort of an individual, these areas may not be thinned. Typically, the complaints such as "my face seems to get thinner, but my thighs never do" are often repeated. The candidates for abdominoplasty are those who have such complaints and sufficient skin elasticity.

Through liposuction, the number of undesired fat cells in particular areas is reduced. Since the number is lower, weight gain never reverses, i.e. weight gain in the area of liposuction is not possible.

The Operation

The use of all drugs including Aspirin and alike should be avoided 7 days before the operation. The operation is performed in operating theater under local anesthesia or neurolept anesthesia (intravenous sedation). It lasts 1-2 hours. No general anesthesia is required. Closer to the area where the fatty tissue will be removed, a 3-5 mm incision is inflicted at allocation below the bikini line. The area is injected with a special liquid that will decrease hemorrhage and kill the pain. This will homogenize the fat inside, facilitating the break-down, reducing the hemorrhage from capillary vessels, and thus, easing the pain and bruising after the operation. Canules of 3-5 mm in diameter are inserted and pulled back through the incision, which breaks down the fatty tissue. The fat then is vacuumed out with a special tool attached to the canules. Vacuuming is performed until the desired body contour and a smooth skin surface are achieved. Postoperatively, special bandages are used for dressing.

Postoperative period

Postoperative pain is at a minimal level. No hospitalization is required. The patient can go home 3-4 hours later. The bandages are removed on the third day and a specially designed girdle is worn. The sutures are removed in 7-10 days. There is one suture on each canule entrance. No scars remain. The girdle should be worn for 4-6 weeks. Bruises, if any, will completely resolve in 1-2 weeks. The individual can do sports or take a vacation in 2-3 weeks. Thinning can be noticed as early as the third day of girdle use. However, the final outcome is observed in 3-4 months because some unvaccumed fat particles remain in the area where liposuction was performed, and their absorption by the body takes 3-4 months. By the use of a girdle, accumulation of fat cells in one area is avoided, and their absorption by the body is facilitated. Liposuction is a satisfying experience with rewarding outcomes.

There will be no weight gain in the area of liposuction. However, a proper diet should be followed. Liposuction procedure aiming to improve body contour does not pose any risks other than those which may be encountered any small operation.
