What are the aesthetic defects? The male and female nose has different qualities with respect to aesthetic measurements. On the profile, the angle between the lips and nose should be about 90 degrees in men and about 100-105 degrees in women. Preferably, the nose contour (the dorsum) should be straight, and even arching may not constitute a defect in men, while the opposite is valid for women. An arched nose in women provides a more mature and firm facial expression. Thus, a straight or slightly arched nose contour in women may be desirable. A baby nose is never arched.

The operation can be performed after 16 years of age in women and 17-18 years of age in men. Preoperatively, the corrections to be performed are drafted with the help of a computer. Therefore, the positive changes with the new nose in the facial expression can be observed. However, the simulation prepared with a computer aims to provide a visualization of the person's new nose. It is not a definite representation of the final shape of the nose, but an approximation.


The operational procedure seeks correction and reshaping of the bones and cartilage under the skin that shapes the nose. Newly shaped crown is covered by the skin.

The Operation

The use of all drugs including Aspirin and alike should be avoided 7-10 days before the operation. The operation is performed in the operation theatre under general anesthesia or neurolept anesthesia (intravenous anesthesia). It lasts 1.5-2 hours. The patient feels no pain during the operation and does not remember anything about the operation. Hospitalization is not required. The patient can go home after 4-6 hours rest. The operation is performed through closed technique in which there are no external incisions or sutures, and the procedure is conducted through nostrils. At the end of the operation, the nostrils are blocked by cotton tampons, and a cast is placed over the nose.

Postoperative period

Postoperative period is more comfortable than expected. The patient does not suffer from any pain that may require pain-killers /when needed, novalgine or paracethamol derivations can be used). A 3-5 hour rest after the operation will suffice. The night of the operation is painless. Elevating the head while sleeping will reduce edema risk. Cold pads or bedrests on the following days are not required. Blood leak (pinkish-light red) from tampons is to be expected. On the 3rd day, the tampons are removed at the clinic. Removal of tampons are not as painful as thought. The tampons used in aesthetic nose operations (shorter tampons) are different from those used in the operations for respiratory difficulties. Eyelids may be swollen in the first couple of days, especially in the morning; however, it improves after the 3rd day. There will not be extensive bruising around the eyes as thought. In fact, it is usually very slight or none at all. The cast is removed on the 10th day. When the cast is removed, all bruises are already healed, but there may still be some swelling around the nose. It should be kept in mind that in aesthetic nose operations, the outcome can be obtained only after six months. The shape of the nose, unlike what is expected, will be edematous and swollen on the day of cast removal. Edema and swelling will shift towards the cheeks and subside in the course of time. It totally resolves in 6 months to a year.

After the cast is removed, the nose should be massaged as instructed by the physician. Massaging should be performed for a few months. This will help resolve edema in a shorter time and improve the shape of the nose
