Filling materials are used to smooth the wrinkles and aging lines. The material can be the subcutaneous tissue harvested from the patient's own body or subcutaneous body fat as well as synthetic filling materials.

In the past, synthetic materials such as liquid silicon or collagen were used. However, they are no longer applied for their drawbacks.

Filling materials are mostly used in the lower sections of the face, on the cheeks, lips and around the chin for deep and permanent wrinkles that could not be eliminated by botox therapy. They have also proven benefits in the other parts of the body where there may be defects and cavities. Another area of use is lip thickening.

The most frequently used synthetic material is a product called Resytlane that contains Hyaluronic acid. It is available in prepared form in syringes filled with 1cc of the material. The procedure of application involves injecting the material into the skin right under the wrinkle line, elevating the area. Hence, the wrinkle is smoothened. Likewise, cavities in the body and thin lips can be filled with this material. The procedure takes 20-30 min. Anesthesia is not required or lotion type of anesthetic agents can be applied on the injection area. There may be slight redness and edema, which resolve in a few days. The patient can go back to his/her daily routine. The effect lasts 6-8 months during which the material is absorbed by the body. There are no side effects.

To serve the same purpose, body tissue of the patient can also be obtained. Both subcutaneous tissue and fatty tissue are harvested from an invisible part of the body (e.g. groin or hip curve), or only the fatty tissue is removed from a fatty area (e.g. abdominal area fat) with the help of a liposuction needle. The tissue is then used as a whole or in liquid blend of tissues also referred to as 'tissue cocktail'. The material is applied as mentioned above. It may be injected into the tissue or placed into the subcutaneously formed sacs or canals. The effect lasts 6 months or longer. When placed as a whole piece, their effect is prolonged.

Similarly, to fill up the defects in various parts of the body, bone tissue can be harvested and transplanted.
